Moving On

Once a service-user has gained the necessary skills and confidence to successfully live in supported living then we will help them to find suitable accommodation which will meet their needs. We will also liase with the relevant parties to achieve this. There are a variety of supported living options available in the Teignbridge and Torbay areas.

Service-users and their families/carers will then be given the opportunity to look at the various housing options available and to speck with other adults with learning disabilites who have 'moved on' and learn about their experiences. This will then enable a service-user to make an informed decision regarding their own future.

If a service-user decides to move then we will support them and their families through this transition period. We will ensure that all individual are fully involved in the decision making progress at a level and pace they are happy with. We will also work with new support staff to share training methods. It is important that we maintain continuity in order to aid our sevice-users' transition into their new home.

Students experiences of moving on:-

One of our service-user's has recently succeeded in moving into his own flat with 24 hours support aweek. Since his move he has made many positive contributions to his community whilst maintaining his job locally. He is continuing to build links and friendships in his hometown and has even gained enough confidence to D.J at local clubs . He had been attending Wywurree for some time and was initially very anxious about the thought of living in his own flat. “Coming to Wywurree and then getting my own flat is the best thing I’ve ever done” he says, “I only wished I’d done it sooner. He now acts as an ambassador to others who are considering ‘moving on’
Three of our lady students have recently moved into shared accomodation with lots of support and have settled well. At their house warming party one of them quoted“I really like the colours we chose for our flat and I love sharing it with my friends”.
Over the last two years Wywurree staff have supported many service-users, living in residential or parental homes to move into various support living options, sucessfully.
